VSAT Earth Station Installation Procedure:

1. Planning

  • Check manufacturer's documentation for earth station installation:

Each manufacturer normally specifies the installation procedure for any earth station manufactured and supplied. If you don't find any, ask the manufacturer for installation documentation. Ofcourse, for small antennas the manufacturer may not provide any installation documentation. Then you need to depend on your experience and other available sources of information.

  • Planning for any civil works

If the installation manual calls for civil works for securing the antenna, then you will be required to do it. For smaller antenna sizes ( 1.2 m or less), the foundation is not normally required. Normally, the manufacturer provides more than one way of antenna installation. These include ground installation, roof-top installation, and wall mount (for smaller size antennas). We do not consider here large antenna (typically 3.8m or above) installations here. Normally, the manufacturer provides complete civil works procedure for such antennas which needs to be executed with precision by experienced workers.

  • Verification of complete hardware and software according to the PNR (Part Number Record).
  • Ensure availability of installation and operation manual.

2. Site Survey

  • Verification of satellite coverage
  • Computing satellite look angles
  • Ensure clear line of sight towards the satellite from the point of installation.
  • Ensuring EMI, and lightening protection
  • Ensuring earth station stability at rated wind load.

3. Installation

  • Man-power requirement
  • Tools and test equipment
  • Physical installation of outdoor units
  • Physical installation of indoor units
  • Cabling
  • Antenna alignment and signal acquisition
  • Configuration, Functional testing and commissioning.
  • Securing the outdoor unit, indoor unit, and cabling.
  • Documentation

4. Maintenance

  • Necessity for earth station maintenance
  • Common problems
